Nine CONC-ers hiked to Carl Lake in the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness on Sunday July 7th. The first two miles traversed an area burned in the 2003 B&B Fire that is now thick with ceanothus (snowbrush) that reaches nearly head high. Larry Weinberg noted that it looks like a bumper crop of blueberries and huckleberries is on the way, though we were several weeks early, and that the big current event were the Washington lilies in bloom. The trail then wound upward through open forest from Cabot Lake to Carl Lake. Carl Lake offered a scenic respite with a nice breeze and no bugs. Total distance was around 10 miles round trip and 1000 feet elevation gain.
