Early-Winter Hike At Smith Rock

Nine Central Oregon Nordic Club members returned to a classic Central Oregon hike at Smith Rock State Park on Sunday, Nov. 25.

“We hiked two versions of this popular walk,” says group leader Roz O’Donoghue. “The group all ascended the Burma Road and traversed the trail down to the river at the junction of the Mesa Verde trail, where we had lunch.

“Part of the group continued alongside the Crooked River while the others summited Misery Ridge. By a serendipitous turn of events, all were reunited at the picnic area just past the footbridge across the river.

“It was a magnificent early-winter day, with plenty of sunshine and cool temperatures. It was a day well enjoyed by all.”

Hiker Thom Iverson reports GPS readings of 6.1 miles and 1,886 feet of elevation gain, with 3,600 feet above sea level being the high point.
